Becoming the Buddha

A begging bowl and robe
A lifetime's wandering

The temple is beautiful
White marble and sandalwood

Within its silence
monks meditate before my image

In a field outside
the stupa is derelict

It is to be burnt
There will be a ceremony

When I ask "why?"
the monks are defensive

"The community has decided!"
they explain

In the emptiness
I dance alone
